Modelling of the eutrophication process in lakes and reservoirs

چکیده
A closed, energy-driven, matter-flow loop of nitrogen—phosphorus cycles has been proposed as a fundamental structure for understanding and controlling the eutrophication process in aquatic environments. It consists of 11 storage variables of nitrogen and phosphorus, and 14 transformations which represent observable biochemical reactions and ecological interaction. The mathematical model has been applied to a microcosm experiment and the comparison between predicted versus measured values supports the validity of the matter-flow rate mechanism of phosphorus and nitrogen cycles, although some modifications for modelling of phytoplankton and zooplankton are necessary.

Reservoir Eutrophication in
Reservoir Eutrophication Reservoirs are water bodies created specifically for the purposes of water management. They differ in many significant ways from natural lakes. Studies have shown, however, that reservoirs have many functional similarities to natural lakes. Furthermore, since much of our limnological understanding stems from the studies of natural lakes (Wetzel, 2001), it is reasonable ...

Eutrophication of lakes and reservoirs is a major water quality problem that poses significant environmental, economic and social threats around the world. Monitoring and managing lakes and reservoirs to prevent or limit eutrophication, therefore, has significant value. The literature has been reviewed to study ecological engineering and management methods that have been and can be applied to i...

GOAL, SCOPE AND BACKGROUND Humans now strongly influence almost every major aquatic ecosystem, and their activities have dramatically altered the fluxes of growth-limiting nutrients from the landscape to receiving waters. Unfortunately, these nutrient inputs have had profound negative effects upon the quality of surface waters worldwide. This review examines how eutrophication influences the bi...
متن کاملThe Bernoulli Ritz-collocation method to the solution of modelling the pollution of a system of lakes
Pollution has become a very serious threat to our environment. Monitoring pollution is the rst step toward planning to save the environment. The use of dierential equations, monitoring pollution has become possible. In this paper, a Ritz-collocation method is introduced to solve non-linear oscillatory systems such as modelling the pollution of a system of lakes. The method is based upon Bernoul...
متن کاملMechanisms of the Deoxygenation of the Hypolimnia of Lakes
The deoxygenation of the hypolimnia of lakes and reservoirs normally occurs as a combined result of the sediment oxygen demand and the oxygen demand of the algae and other plant materials that grow in the epilimnion. For some waterbodies, there may be appreciable amounts of oxygen-demanding material brought in from the watershed, but this is usually a relatively unimportant source of oxygen dem...
